One of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World is in Australia : the Great Barrier Reef , the largest sanctuary of marine life in the world. Extends for 2300 km along the northeast coast of the country and is one of the most fantastic places in the world for diving. Access to dive sites is easy, relatively inexpensive and is mainly from Cairns, one of the towns closest to the reef. The Great Barrier Reef is so dazzling that it's worth doing a diving course before embarking there. And aside at least three days for this tour.
The Great Barrier Reef is composed of about 2900 reefs, 600 continental islands and 300 coral atolls. In this complex ecosystem, there are around 1500 species of fish, 360 species of coral, from 5000 to 8000 species of molluscs, 400 to 500 species of marine algae, 1330 species of crustaceans and over 800 species of echinoderms. The area is also preserved by the presence of cubozoários, a group of cnidarians by dangerous toxins known to man.
Over the years, the corals sank many ships - even the Endeavour, Captain Cook's ship (who "discovered" Australia), hit the reef and almost foundered. Without the barrier, the Australian history would have been quite different. One of the most famous wreck is the HMS Pandora, which sank in 1791. The Queensland Museum has been leading archaeological expeditions to the Pandora since 1983.
There are many different types of coral, some grow slowly and live hundreds of years, others are growing faster. The colors of coral are created by algae, and only the living corals are colorful - the dead are white.
