The Fiji islands are situated in the heart of the South Pacific, midway between Melanesia ( the Solomon Islands , Vanuatu , New Caledonia and Papua New Guinea) and Polynesia (Tonga, Samoa, Cook Islands and French Polynesia ). Vanua Levu and Viti Levu, of volcanic origin, are the largest, accepting the latter's capital city - Suva, the country's biggest tourist attraction and one of the most sophisticated cities in the South Pacific
The Fiji islands are protected from mass tourism by a single detail, as small as fundamental: the culture of the Fijians 700,000, the land is sacred and can not be sold to foreigners. Although 380,000 tourists visit Fiji each year never see giant resorts and pasteurized. Dominated by small and charming hotels with few rooms usually the local cottages, called bures.
In Suva, in addition to water sports, you can visit the Fiji Museum and see interesting colonial buildings, mosques, Hindu temples, churches and cultural centers. The Roman Catholic Cathedral (1902) is one of the landmarks of the city, but a foray into the municipal market is no less fascinating, given the variety of exotic fruits and vegetables, fish, seafood and spices that brings.
Have Vanua Levu is far less developed, which is one of the best places to understand the traditional Fijian way of life, which eventually, anyway, for the drive to one of the fabulous beaches with excellent points to the practices of snorkelling, diving and kayaking. Within wild and rugged, the way of archaeological excavations and Nabouwalu Wasavula, trekking is another option.
Besides Vita Levu and Vanua Levu, Taveuni and the islands of Kadavu also have a sizeable, but the rest is made of small country of origin subarquipélagos coralígena: Lomaiviti, Lau, Moala, Yasawa, Mamanutha and Rotuma. Relatively untouched, preserving reefs, lagoons, harbors, as well as native vegetation since time immemorial, among hundreds of small uninhabited islands and atolls - offshore floating scraps of painted turquoise and lush greenery.
The first European explorer known as Fiji, in 1643, became fascinated with the wealth of its reefs. The way described by the hazards of shipping these water away, however, sailors Western by more than 130 years. Until Captain Cook took note of these "islands inhabited by fierce warriors and cannibals" (the same is true, the ancestors of those who welcome us smiling always had the habit of eating their enemies, the sailors lost, and even of those who wanted convinced that God was only a), (re) discovered the archipelago in 1774 and joined the British in the supply chain.
Interestingly, addition of sandalwood, the most popular gem in these islands, replaced by a series of luxury goods, was the sea-cucumber (a sea slug), much loved by gourmets wealthy at that time.
In the late nineteenth century, serious conflicts interisland led Britain to intervene, to depose the king Cakobau and integrate the islands in his vast empire. Between 1874 and 1970, Fiji has been under the dominion of the British crown. In 1987 the Republic was proclaimed, but only in 1992 that the power, formerly in the hands of the military, went to the civil and the political situation normalized.
The Fiji Islands are a stunning natural beauty and allow the practice of various activities, which rule out the possibility of being bored. Both the most luxurious resorts and small pensions seaside organize outdoor activities: surfing, climbing, scuba diving ... But if for a few days prefer drinking cocktails and eating fresh seafood on the terrace, there are plenty of exotic flavors that satisfy your taste - in Fiji grow almost every tropical fruit and the number of known species of fish living in waters attracts anglers from around the world.
On the other hand, there is a multitude of islands, many of them deserted, which can be visited during a day on cruises that are delirious romantic spirits.
The group of Mamanuthas, for example, is a cluster of tiny islands of the west coast of Viti Levu, easily accessible from Nadi. They are popular with divers, snorkellers and surfers for the quality of the waves and the beauty of the reefs.
The group of Lau, midway of the Kingdom of Tonga, exudes a strong Polynesian flavor.
Vanuabalavu, one of the largest, has a very lively market, and Kiabu, which divides a reef with its neighbor Yacata, is a private island, you can receive a maximum of six visitors at a time. It provides activities such as windsurfing, sailing, hiking and visits to caves.
In the Yasawa group of, for example, there is a small oasis that is worth. We refer to Turtle Island, which is installed a luxury lodge which receives only 14 couples at a time. The houses were built on the sand on wood and are equipped with Jacuzzi, king-size beds and shed. The lodge works scheme was "all inclusive" and offers numerous activities, including walking and horse riding, windsurfing, diving, picnics on deserted beaches and massages.
Pamper this dimension is also what gives you the Dolphin Island, an island resort, which opened recently near Viti Levu - has only two villas, built according to the traditional architecture of Fiji, and accepts only four guests per night. An exclusive piece of paradise!
Besides the natural beauty, Fiji we have an incredible mix of local people with European and Oriental influences. No wonder that, in local languages, there are 15 words for "heaven".
For a good time in Fiji there are several options for staying, including advise: Vatulele Island Hotel and Nukubati Island Great Sea Reef.
