Despite being a very small country, Malta has a history full of deeds, battles and heroes. Eighty kilometers south of Sicily and just under three hundred of the African continent, the archipelago provides a bridge cultural and military ties between North Africa and Europe , which led to successive attacks over the centuries. The great Ottoman siege in 1565, was one of them. La Valletta , the capital, is one of the best preserved walled cities in the world and the Fort St. Angelo is one of the best examples of impenetrability, by which the country became famous among the frustrated conquerors.
The capital of Malta is located on the cable on the east coast. It lies between the Grand Harbour to the south and the port of Marsamxett north. Is named in honor of Jean Parisot Vallete, Grand Master of the Knights of St. John, who brilliantly directed the rebuilding of the city after expelling the Turks in the Great Siege of 1565. Valetta is still a beautiful Baroque city, its fortifications are impressive, with massive stone walls of the fortress of San Elmo.
Valletta has many beautiful churches and castles, among which stands the Cathedral of St. John and the auberges, or Knights of the hostels. The Auberge de Castille, remodeled in the eighteenth century, is now the office of prime minister. The Grand Harbour has several docks and boats can dock up to 300,000 tons.
Valletta has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Over the years, Valletta has welcomed the emperors, heads of state, artists and poets. The city is full of cafes and bars with lots of personality. Moreover, today the city is one of the main attractions in Malta, and it has a magnificent view of Grand Harbour.
