Composed of sandstone and conglomerate, Mount Augustus is a formation known to geologists as Mount Augustus Sandstone, and is covered by an older granite at the north end. The Mount Augustus Sandstone is a deposition of ancient river systems and somewhat younger than the old granite of 1.65 billion years below him.
