Castile and Leon have strong links to Portugal , and not just by proximity. Salamanca is part of this community of Spain , and a quarter of its 180,000 inhabitants are students. Cathedrals, palaces, museums and two thousand bars are the delight of those who arrive in this city and its historical center is a World Heritage Site since 1988.

The city environment is cosmopolitan, since the students invade Salamanca every year. Despite a considerable size, the city maintains a historic village atmosphere and well cared for that reason everything or almost everything is on foot. The narrow streets of the center confirm this, everything will go to the Plaza Mayor, Salamanca and the nerve center and continues through the Plaza del Corrillo, Tavira or Latin Calle Mayor Street.

As a city of culture that is, do not miss a visit to the University, opened in 1254. The facade of the main building of the University is in Plateresque, fruit of the Spanish Renaissance. It was built in the sixteenth century, when students enrolled arrived at 8000. In this city by the river Tormes, there are many interesting features, including the two cathedrals, the New and Old. The oldest, in a romantic style with Gothic influences, dates from the twelfth century and during the Spanish Civil War served as a refuge to General Franco. The New Cathedral of Salamanca began construction in 1513, but was only completed 220 years later. In the Gothic is also possible to see the marks of the baroque, neoclassical and the plateresque. Other sites of interest in Salamanca are the Convent of San Esteban and the Plaza Mayor, which was the scene of religious ceremonies, civic, recreational, bullfights and public executions, today is the meeting point for locals and tourists.
