The Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is protected by a park designated National Park Kilimanjaro , a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The melting of glaciers (glaciers) at the top of Kilimanjaro is a reality. Estimated at around 12 square kilometers in length in 1900, now cover only 2 square miles, and this rate will disappear in 2020. The heating of the earth does not explain this phenomenon, which can also be caused by a slow resumption of volcanic activity, manifested by small smoke.
The ascent is technically easy but long and hard by cold and altitude. The most frequented route is the Marangu route. The other routes are the routes practiced Machame, Mweka and Shira. Approximately 20,000 people each year try to reach the top. This number is controlled by the Tanzanian authorities.
In September 2008, a team led by the Portuguese Rui Fernandes, researcher at the Centre of Geophysics of the University of Lisbon and professor at the University of Beira Interior (UBI) measured with greater accuracy when the altitude of the highest point of the mountain using the GPS. The result has accurate 5891.8 meters to centimeters.
